Natalia Beristain

Natalia Beristain (Mexico City, 1981) graduated cum laude from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica, specializing in filmmaking. Her short film “Peces plátano” won the award for Best Mexican Short Film at the 5th Morelia International Film Festival, and in 2008 participated in the Official Selection of the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2009 he founded the production company Chamaca Films. From 2008 to 2010 he was Manager of the cast of the National Theater Company in Mexico. In 2010 she directed “Entreguerras”, a stage paraphrase based on texts by Thomas Bernhard.

“No quiero dormir sola” is his debut feature film; it premiered at the Critics’ Week at the Venice International Film Festival in 2012 and that same year won the award for best feature film at the Morelia Film Festival.

“No quiero dormir sola” participated in more than 30 international festivals and in 2013 won the Yellow Robin Award at the Curaçao-Rotterdam International Film Festival and the Jury Award for Best Feature Film at the New Mexican Film Festival in Durango. In 2014 “No Quiero Dormir Sola” was nominated for 5 awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Mexico, including Best Film, Best First Feature and Best Actress for Adriana Roel.

That same year she was invited to direct the miniseries “Requiem por Leona Vicario” for the most important cultural channel in Mexico, Canal 11. Since 2017 she has been part of the teaching staff of the Escuela Superior de Cine. Recently, he participated in “La Habitación”, a compilation of eight short films directed by contemporary Mexican directors.

In 2017 “Los Adioses”, his second film, had its international premiere at the Rome International Film Festival and in Mexico it premiered at the XV Morelia International Film Festival where it won the Audience Award. In 2018 “Los Adioses” was nominated for 8 awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Mexico, including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Actress for Karina Gidi. It also won Best Director at the Canacine awards.
In 2018, he co-directed with Beto Hinojosa “Luis Miguel, la serie”; a Gato Grande and Netflix production. In 2019, he co-directs “El Secreto de Selena” for Telemundo, “Historia de un Crimen: Colosio y Monarca”, both series for Netflix and “El Presidente” for Amazon (nominated for Best Drama Series by the International Emmy Awards in 2021).
He also directed the short documentary “Nosotras”, about gender violence and femicides in Mexico for the El Día Después platform. The short film was produced by Diego Luna and premiered at the Morelia International Film Festival in 2019.
In 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic, she was invited to collaborate within Netflix’s Homemade project. A collection of 17 short films with several of the world’s most renowned filmmakers.

In 2021 she directed 3 episodes of the series “Mosquito Coast” for the Apple platform.
He is currently post-producing his third feature film: “Ruido”. She is also working as an Executive Producer and Showrunner in a series for Apple México.
