Matías Bize won the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film with LA VIDA DE LOS PECES in 2011. This Chilean director began his career at the age of 23 directing SÁBADO 2003), a film made entirely in a single sequence shot. The film had its world premiere at the prestigious Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival, where it won 4 awards, including the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Award. The film was selected to participate in several film festivals around the world, winning multiple awards and excellent reviews.
He directed EN LA CAMA (2005), a Chilean-German co-production that had its world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival. The film won the Espiga de Oro at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Valladolid, becoming the youngest director to win this award in the history of the Festival. This film has won more than 40 international awards and has been commercially released worldwide. EN LA CAMA represented Chile in the Oscar race. The specialized magazine Cahiers du Cinéma described him as “the most promising Chilean filmmaker”.
In Barcelona he directed LO BUENO DE LLORAR (2007), a Spanish-Chilean production premiered worldwide at the Locarno International Film Festival. It received the Special Jury Award and the Critics Award at the Valdivia International Film Festival. In 2010, Matías directed LA VIDA DE LOS PECES (2010), a Chilean-French co-production, selected at the Venice Film Festival. The film won the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film. It represented Chile in the Oscar race and was commercially released in most of the world.
He later directed LA MEMORIA DEL AGUA (2015), a Chilean-Spanish-Argentinian-German-Spanish co-production starring Benjamin Vicuña and Elena Anaya. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. It had an extensive festival run and won several awards. The film was commercially released in most of the world.
In the Dominican Republic he directed EN TU PIEL (2019), a film that was born as a remake of EN LA CAMA to finally become an original feature film. The film premiered at the prestigious Transylvania International Film Festival. EN TU PIEL was a success in its country of origin and was commercially released in many countries as Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Germany and Chile.
In the hardest moment of the confinement, he directed MENSAJES PRIVADOS (2022), a choral film in which the director invited his closest actors to record themselves with their own cell phones and to build a story based on true stories. The film premiered at the prestigious Malaga International Film Festival where it won the Acting Award and the Editing Award. MENSAJES PRIVADOS will soon have commercial releases in different parts of the world.
Finally, Matías directed EL CASTIGO (2022), a Chilean-Argentinean co-production made entirely in a single sequence shot. The film was selected in the Official Competition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, a Class A film industry event where he won the Acting Award. It also won the Best Film Award at the Beijing International Film Festival, Best Director at the Malaga Film Festival and Best Film of the Year by the Chilean Art Critics Circle, among more than 20 other varied and prestigious awards. The film is being commercially released in most of the world.
